Relief of distress and poverty...
Free State Care in Action arose from women’s need to relieve the
distress of people who sank into poverty after the Anglo-Boer War. 100 years
later, relief of distress and poverty remains a priority for the organisation.
Social relief is provided in the form of food parcels, the running of soup
kitchens and the provision of clothing and blankets to indigent persons.

It is endeavoured to involve persons receiving social relief in
income-generating projects. Several successful job creation projects,
particularly sewing and baking projects as well as vegetable gardens, are run by
these persons.

Unemployed persons are also assisted in drawing up CVs, as well as obtaining
suitable employment. Where necessary, persons are also assisted in applying for
social grants for which they qualify.

Free State Care is very grateful towards the community for the donations and
support that enable the organisation to provide these essential services.

The grant that the institution receives annually from the Volksblad Christmas
Fund, and which is used exclusively for relief of distress, enables it to truly
make a difference in the lives of thousands of less privileged persons.
