Social work services – our core
business
Free State Care in Action runs 17 social work offices in all regions of the Free
State. For this purpose the organisation employs 32 social workers and 19
assistant social workers, as well as administrative staff members. They are
supported by a strong team of volunteers.

Development and empowerment
As indicated in its mission, Free State Care in Action is
committed to also developing and empowering those who receive assistance. In
this way, they are enabled to function autonomously in the future.

Relief of distress and poverty
Free State Care in Action arose from women’s need
to relieve the distress of people who sank into poverty after the Anglo-Boer
War. 100 years later, relief of distress and poverty remains a priority for the
organisation.

Care of the elderly
Care of the elderly is an important component of Free State Care’s service
delivery, and takes place at four levels.

Child and Family Care
The first seven years are the most important years of a person’s development,
and Free State Care therefore places a high premium on the early
development of children. 19 pre-primary cum nursery schools and crèches are run
for this purpose, and a total of 1016 children are cared for here on a daily
basis.

Vrystaat-versorging in Aksie bied reeds vir 30 jaar ouerleidingsprogramme
aan waardeur ouers se ouerskapvaardighede versterk word. Vir die doel word
gebruik gemaak van ouerleidinglesings wat deur kundiges opgestel is. Uittreksels
uit die lesings verskyn daagliks in Volksblad onder die opskrif “Jy en Jou
Kind”. Hierdie uittreksels het soveel byval by die publiek gevind dat dit in
boekvorm saamgevoeg is en verkoop word.

Mentorship
As an established and recognised welfare organisation, the
National Executive Board and some services of Free State Care in Action have,
for quite some time, also been involved in the empowerment of developing
community and non-governmental organisations.

Employee assistance programmes...
Free State Care in Action recently entered a new field when the organisation
became involved in assistance programmes for employees of firms in the corporate
sector. This initiative arises from the organisation’s need to add value to
firms that have financially supported Free State Care in Action. This service is
currently offered to two firms in Bloemfontein.
